Surprising city. Some very nice, historic areas, and excellent shopping malls and streets. Lots of good cafes and restaurants. As with most cities, it is quite busy with traffic, and is noisy throughout the night with major roads running through and around it. Also, again like many places, some neighbourhoods can feel a little unsafe, with groups of people gathering and drinking on corners etc. Worth noting that many cafes and small convenience stores only accept cash, or only take card payments above a certain amount. There are plenty of ATMs, but the ones not at a bank can charge very high fees to withdraw cash. Whilst the city is easy to walk around and not huge, the tram is a brilliant way to get around. Day tickets are reasonably priced, and you can travel pretty far out to neighbouring towns and cities. They do get busy around morning and evening rush hours, and they can get very full. Food and beverage prices get higher the closer you get to the tourist areas. The main tourist area is around the Water Tower. Some nice cafes around the gardens, but be prepared to pay more for things there. There are some really excellent places to eat dotted around the city. Mainly small independent spots, and prices are generally very reasonable. Of these, I can highly recommend Caffe Sammo, Baguelette Café, Henriette Burger Bar, and JAMY'S Burger which are all places we ate. Some of the service can be a little slow, but I don't know whether that was because of the time/day we went, or whether there were shortages of staff. Nothing major, but not necessarily what everyone might expect. Overall, Mannheim is a decent place. I wouldn't say it's a tourist heaven, and it is fairly mundane in many ways. We were there visiting our daughter at Mannheim University, but I probably wouldn't have the city very high on a list of German tourist destinations.
We went to see a lot of Christmas Markets and the Novum hotel is round the corner from the train station and we found it easy to travel to all our destinations , plus visiting interesting places in Mannheim , Our only problem was that we could not benefit from the Deuch travel ticker that cost €49 and you can travel all over Germany by trains , trams and buses , for a month , but it is only for Germans and not for the European countries as well , which I find unfair . We were happy with our Hotel but we had no Wifi in our room , we could only use their Wifi in the ground floor .
I came at the wrong time of year, cold and wet. None the less if you're dressed right there is a lot to see. Be adventurous and explore by getting a day ticket (public transportation) to take you all over Mannheim.
The city lost its German values. I have never seen such a dirty city, cigarette butts and trash everywhere. Not safe to walk in the centre during night. The Market square offer only kebab shops. I had my dinner at the Kurfürst Wirtshaus am Markt, one of the six German restaurant that offered traditional, good quality food. Next time I will avoid... this fallen city.
I really liked my time in this city. I wish I had prepared for a day or two more. I liked that you could get anywhere easily with the tram or just walking. I found various vegetarian options. I really liked the Jesuitkirche, The Baroque Place and the Rosengarten
Mannheim is overshadowed in the tourist world by Heidelberg, which is a local transit ride away. Nevertheless, it has its own attractions, and I'd recommend giving it a few days. Very easy to get to by train from Frankfurt, which was partly why we chose it. We were there three full days (plus arrival/departure days), and greatly enjoyed ourselves. It's very walkable, though there is excellent transit if you need to use it (we didn't). The Reiss-Engelhorn Museen are of absolutely excellent quality for a city museum complex. They had a lovely exhibition of Art Nouveau glass while we were there, and their archeological display on Mannheim is very good indeed! The Kunsthalle has art from the Impressionists to the 21st C. That includes a lot of art movements that I normally ignore in any other gallery, but we found it unexpectedly interesting. Having had to pay to see it, we were determined to take our time, and it was rewarding. What they have is well curated. By the way, anyone who has ever read Lovecraft must see 'Mootherr' by Laure Prouvost! Very creepy! :-) Lots of good restaurants to eat in! We enjoy German food, and were not disappointed. Recommendations given for the Alter Simpl, Kürfurst, Schwarzer Adler and Keller were all solid. Plenty of other places to eat, as well, including a largish Turkish quarter, as well as the inevitable Italian and doner-kebab places. It's a fun city to walk around in. Interesting and varied architecture, and small enough to cover much of the main grid in a few days. There are some spectacular murals on the buildings, and you can get a guide to the better-known ones.
